The international competition of the exceptional solutions of brick architecture "Baltijos mūras ir stogas 2013“ („Baltic Brick and Roof Award 2013“) organized by Wienerberger AS – the winner in the category of tiled roof.

The goal of this competition is to find and distinguish objects in the construction process of which ceramic bricks, roof ceramic tiles, paving blocks were used in the best way in respect of architectural, technical and syntagmatic approach. Usually projects-winners show a wide range of feasibilities of using ceramics in construction and offer interesting solutions.

The private residential house plot is on a slope in Žaliakalnis historic residential district built up with villas built in the beginning of the twentieth century.

Our task was to design the extension of old house built in the period between the 1st and the 2nd World War by creating new residential spaces for living room, kitchen, bedroom, home cinema and sauna.

The area for the new site is provided in the southern side of the plot, along the plot. The building extension faces the picturesque panorama of the surrounding area which opens from the top of the slope.

The site of the new building is connected to the old one by transparent glass connection between two single slope buildings thus highlighting the old and new part. Finishing of the new (volume) creates a relevant contrast which highlights different periods of building construction.
